GARMIN 010-00466-00 Forerunner 205 GPS Receiver

Just when you thought Garmin had cornered the market on powerful, affordable, and effective wrist-mounted GPS devices, here comes the Forerunner 205. The release of this device is a major achievement from a design and technology perspective. This isn't just marketing-speak; the Forerunner 205 is the most accurate, most reliable wrist-mounted performance and GPS tracking tool we've ever tested. Yes, it's that good. While no device this compact can do everything (yet), the 205 pushes the boundaries of what is possible from something strapped around your wrist. While the 205 doesn't offer heart rate monitoring, or connectivity with Garmin's wireless speed and cadence sensor--for that, you'll need to step up to the Forerunner 305--but it's a great way to get basic GPS location and performance data.

View Garmin's Forerunner demonstration video.

The design cleverly integrates the GPS antenna and aims it towards the sky when you're running or walking. View larger.

The simple docking cradle makes charging and data connectivity a snap (Forerunner 305 model shown).

The 305 features rudimentary mapping and location marking functions. View larger.
Design
The 205's design is a radical departure from Garmin's previous generation of wrist mounted GPS devices, which reached a pinnacle with the Garmin Forerunner 301. While the 301 delivered accurate heart rate monitoring, good performance tracking, and decent GPS reception, it didn't quite deliver in the design department. The form factor was bulky and wearing it wasn't much different than duct taping a full-sized GPS device to your wrist.

Not so with the 205. Garmin's engineers obviously burned the midnight oil and have come up with a waterproof design that, while certainly not as small as a sports watch, feels just as comfortable. The curved casing allows the unit's antenna to face the sky when you're running, while the widescreen display is perfectly positioned for viewing when you need it. And the display certainly deserves a few kudos. While it's smaller than the display found on previous Forerunners, its resolution is far higher, offering incredible clarity and crispness.

Garmin has smartly given the 205 a simple button layout and the buttons have a nice tactile feel with good pressure response. The right side houses the menu selection and enter buttons, while the left houses a power/backlight button and a mode button. This simple and elegant solution is a big improvement over the sometimes confusing button functionality of previous Forerunners. View button layout.

The underside of the 205 is pretty nondescript, except for a row of contacts that interface with the included charging and data cradle. The cradle is small and unobtrusive and its single mini-USB port connects to either an included AC adapter, or a USB cable that connects to your PC. In addition to data transfer with the USB cable, you can also charge the 205's embedded lithium-ion battery via a powered USB connection from your computer.

GPS Performance
The big news about the Forerunner 205 is that it features an integrated, high-sensitivity SiRFstar III GPS receiver. What does this mean? It means that the 205's ability to both track, and maintain a lock on, your position is better than anything before it. After an intial battery charge, our product tester had the 205 on his wrist and was tracking speed and distance with GPS satellites within 3 minutes. The next time we used the 205, satellite acquisition was nearly instantaneous. A run through dense trees didn't faze the unit either; tracking remained true and steady. Performance on a bike was equally impressive. Whatever witchcraft has been cooked up by the designers of the SiRF technology, we like it!

While the Forerunner 205 isn't billed as a GPS navigation device, it does have some rudimentary mapping, waypoint marking, and routing capabilities. In addition to marking locations along your journey, you can zoom in or out of a simple map that displays your current direction and path. There's also a "go to location" feature that routes you back to your starting location, or to any location you have defined. Once you have defined several locations, you can save this information as a route, allowing you to travel the same path in the future. As you'll see below, the 205's new "Courses" feature gives you new levels of control over how you define your favorite runs and rides.

Training Functions
The 205 is first and foremost a training tool, and its ability to organize a ton of data types into a user experience that is intuitive and simple is no small feat. Whiz-bang technology aside, if you can't use it and make it a natural part of your exercise routine, it's worthless. When it comes to these factors -- and here's the take home message on the 205 -- this device is successful where many other devices fail.

The heart and soul of the 205 can be found on the data screens, which give you real-time information about all aspects of your workout. In fact, the 305 can display a dizzying array of data, such as calories burned, distance, elevation, grade, and heading, as well as multiple lap and pace modes.

Thankfully, the device makes it easy to define how much or how little data you want to view during a workout. You can arrange the data that's most important to you and then make that data appear front and center on the device. Indeed, within a few minutes of skimming the manual and fiddling with the device setup, you'll have your most important data displaying just the way you like it.

Garmin's Virtual Partner function was cool feature of previous Forerunners and they've decided to keep a good thing going with the 205. If you're the type that performs best when you've got a competitor egging you on, you'll love this function, as it allows you to set up virtual running or biking companions that compete against you.

If you're looking for an complicated workout with a variety of intervals and intensity levels, or just a quick three-mile jog against your best time last week, the 205 has you covered. Navigating to the Workouts menu on the device yields three options: Quick Workouts, Interval, and Advanced Workout. A quick workout is just that; set the distance and time, distance and pace, or time and pace of your planned workout and off you go. Interval workouts are just the same, but they allow you to add repetitions and rest between them. When you really want to get fancy with your exercise, you can step up to advanced workouts, which include goals for each workout step, as well as varied distances, times, and rest periods. You can use the Garmin Training Center software to set up these workouts and then upload them to the device.

PC Connectivity and Software
Garmin has been outfitting their devices with USB connectivity for some time now -- a welcome move for those who struggled with serial port connections in the days of yore. Thanks to USB, the 205 integrates seamlessly with the Training Center software and we quickly had workout history uploaded and stored on the PC (Sadly, Training Center is not Mac-compatible).

In a first for the Forerunner series, the Training Center software also lets you define courses on your PC that you can upload to the device. When course information is combined with uploaded workout information, the Forerunner becomes a complete guide, telling you where to go, when to make a turn, and what kind of workout to do when you're on the road or path. Back on the PC, the software's ability to overlay workout data on maps of the course makes it easy to see where the course offers up the tough hills and the easy recovery spots. Plus, the ability to track historical performance on a given course is a great way to measure your improvement.

The 205 is also fully compatible with Garmin's MotionBased service, which takes your training to another level by connecting your data with the Internet. While we weren't able to use the service, the promise of sharing courses, maps, workouts, and performance data with other users is intriguing. And if you're a serious endurance athlete, you'll be glad to know that the 205 is also compatible with TrainingPeaks.com, an easy-to-use web based training system designed to help athletes train for any event.

Pros

  • Radically new design is better in every way
  • Amazing accuracy and fast satellite acquisition time
  • So simple to set up and use, you will actually use it
Cons
  • No Mac OS compatibility
  • Okay, it's bigger than a sport's watch -- but so much more powerful
What's in the Box
Forerunner 205, Garmin Training Center CD-ROM, docking cradle, expander strap, A/C charger, USB cable, owner's manual, quick start guide.

Customer Review: FINALLY!
This a great GPS! it has the features and more that ive been looking for.
Customer Review: Great marathon training tool!
The watch works great and has a lot of really useful features. The only complaint I have is that it sometimes takes the watch several minutes to locate the satellites. Other than that, it is very accurate.

Customer Review: Protects casing but stitching doesn't last
The soft spongy material used is pretty good for protecting the casing as well as the screen. But if you're using the metal D-ring (like with a carabiner), the stitching will not last. It took me 3 day hikes through the Malaysian rainforest before it half-tore. Now, I just use the casing for protection and put my carabiner through the velcro catch (which isn't designed very friendly, but the stitching there looks a fair bit tougher).
Customer Review: Poor design.
I tried getting this cover on my unit Vista HCx three times...it took that many attempts to get the buttons and windows even close to lining up. The lowest button on the left side doesn't even show up in the window. When trying to get the unit out of the cover, I noticed the stick was being pulled way out of its socket, certainly leading to a button failure in the near future. I won't put this thing on my unit again. I won't even try it in the field.

Customer Review: Good Product
I was looking for a GPS to work with my Alpine system, finally I found this GPS that works perfect with my system, The only issue is that does not work the touch screen but they managed to have a remote that is very friendly to use; I think they have to increase the memory that comes with the system becouse it is too low, If you want to imput large amount of maps you need to buy a SD memory to do so.
Customer Review: Unable to upgrade outdated data set
This unit is a very good unit as far as performance is concerned, but the dataset for mapping was two generations old (2008) and customer service refused to give me a new dataset saying they did not do this for this unit and that I would have to buy the latest maps at a cost of $99.99. This in spite of the fact that the call was made within two weeks of installation. So be sure the latest data set (now 2010) is installed before buying this unit or you are on your own.

Customer Review: Great item! Nice looking, secure and does the job.
Just a few quick words to consider for the GPS user: I had purchased another popular friction mount with my first GPS unit. Mounting on the windshield invites thievery! After about 10 months, the grommets on the other holder holding the weights broke, and the mount became an annoying beanbag. This unit has the weights in a nice compact package that do not look like they will lose their shape or break. The unit is nice looking, and small! It is probably only a 1/3 larger than the width of a 4.3 inch unit. This means you do not have a cumbersome unit on your dash. Underneath, there is sticky plastic that should hold the unit in place. I have had occasion where I have disturbed the unit when making sudden stops or aggressive turns, but typically it is extremely stable. For the price, I think this is the ideal friction mount and so far I am very pleased.

Customer Review: The ONLY Cable You Can Use
It's a shame that not all of Garmin's handheld devices come with this mandatory cable. With well over two feet of sturdy cable, one end is a standard USB plug and the other is a specifically made rectangular plug for your Garmin unit. This easily enables you to download waypoints, geocache, maps and other GPS oriented software from your computer to your Garmin unit. Well worth the cost, Garmin made sure there are no other cables that can be used for this purpose. Be sure that your unit requires this cable before purchase, as there are so many different types on the market. I use VISTA on my PC, so this should work with earlier models of Windows. If you own a MAC, check Mac compatibility. Good luck.

Garmin GTM-12 FM Traffic Receiver for Traffic-Enabled GPS Navigators

With the Garmin GTM-12 FM Traffic Receiver for Traffic-Enabled GPS Navigators, you save drive time, gas, and your sanity by adding traffic services to your compatible Garmin. The GTM 12 is an FM TMC (Traffic Message Channel) traffic receiver and antenna. It receives digital information (where available) on traffic and road construction tie-ups that your compatible Garmin unit uses to offer an alternate route. The GTM 12 features a new compact design and includes an antenna suction cup mount, making it easy to install.

The Garmin GTM-12 help you avoid traffic tie-ups. TMC data is available in a fast-growing number of cities throughout North America and Europe, and gives prompt, accurate notification of accidents, road construction, police, or emergency action, etc. In most areas, depending on the service provider, TMC traffic broadcasts are continuous. There's no waiting for scheduled traffic news updates or random alerts. With the GTM 12, you see traffic developments in real-time, as they happen, so you can make the right decision sooner. The system also alerts you when a traffic problem is on your route and proposes an alternate route to avoid the incident. Because traffic broadcasts are received via a "silent" FM data channel, you can still listen to music or news programming on your car radio without interference from incoming FM traffic data transmissions. The GTM 12 is a plug-and-play FM RDS-TMC receiver that does not require professional installation.

Note: Traffic services are available only in select cities where coverage exists. A subscription may be required to enable traffic capability. The purchase the GTM 12 includes a 15-month subscription to Clear Channel TMC in the Americas.

What's in the Box
GTM 12 FM TMC traffic receiver, and owner's manual.
Customer Review: Amazing at first, but needs updating, and not worth the price
I got this when I moved to LA, where the traffic is flat out horrible. I first tried it with a free subscription, and it got me back to my house within 10 minutes when It would normally take me through this massive highway corridor downtown (the I110-I10-101-I5 merger) and saved me 20-30 minutes of waiting in traffic. I thought it was amazing, however since then, it often takes me on side routes where the traffic is far worse than what is happening on the highway, and that's because it doesn't understand or know if, when, or where traffic is taking place outside of the highway. The GPS always has a number of how many minutes you can expect to be delayed, but it's almost never accurate unless the number goes above 30-40 minutes and at that point you don't need to know specifics to wanna try and avoid that kind of traffic. If they could just either refine the estimated delay time (as it's NEVER accurate even closely) or add side street traffic, at least on major city streets like Sunset, Santa Monica, Hollywood, I would gladly pay through the nose for this thing, I can definitely say that until these updates are implemented, my subscription will not be renewed. While it is very nice to be able to see traffic ahead of you and know how traffic is all over the place, with a smart phone or iPhone, all you need to do is look at maps and get the same exact information for free, especially with the new iPhone 3GS being so reliable as a GPS unit and map updater.
Customer Review: A Technology waiting for Clear Channel TMC (in DC) and Garmin to Catch Up
I've had the GTM-12 attached to my Garmin Nuvi 360 for about three weeks in the greater Washington, DC area. I can only express my significant dissapointment in the execution of this product in conjunction with my Garmin. I would give this product one star, except it technically works to show traffic problems on an occasional basis. For most intents and purposes, it is completely worthless. Let me explain. The primary reason to buy this device is to have the Garmin alert you to traffic problems and reroute you if severe, or at least suggest a reroute. First problem: Coverage. Clear Channel TMC apparently does not cover critical major highways in the DC area, such as 295 through DC. This isn't a minor oversight, it's irresponsible. Second problem: My Garmin doesn't perform any kind of traffic alerts even when facing severe congestion. For example, I travel westbound Rt 66 in the morning, a notorious A.M. bottleneck from DC to the split with the 267 tollroad (this road has traffic coverage). In my routing, I have a choice to avoid 66 if the traffic is bad enough. Even when the traffic map shows congestion and where I have an uncongested alternative (which is also has traffic coverage), the Garmin does not suggest the alternative. Third problem: the Traffic map itself doesn't adjust for your new position automatically. One has to keep selecting "Map" then "back" in order to refresh the traffic map. Annoying and dangerous. To summarize, the combination of the GTM-12 and my traffic-enabled Garmin Nuvi 360 sufferes from 1) poor Garmin programming that does not properly suggest reroutes or gives you proper traffic alerts and 2) poor traffic coverage from Clear Channel. Disappointing. HOWEVER, with some new programming from Garmin and better traffic coverage from Clear Channel TMC, this would be a tremendous winner. That makes the current situation even more disappointing. Note, too, that you must have the unit plugged into power to receive traffic. Don't forget your charger. BTW, I do not know if the newer Garmin Nuvi "T" units (with integrated traffic receivers) suffer from these problems.

Garmin eMap GPS Receiver, Map Compatible

The size of a small, flat calculator, the eMap contains a 12-parallel-channel global positioning system receiver and weighs a mere six ounces. Even with its compact style, the eMap boasts an extra-large display for showing more map data and the same power you've come to expect from Garmin hand-helds--even while operating for up to 14 hours on two AA batteries.

The eMap features an internal base map containing information on North and South America including state and country boundaries, lakes, rivers, streams, airports, cities, towns, coastlines, and U.S., state, and interstate highways. In addition, the eMap provides exit information for the federal interstate highway system. With the eMap, you will know when you are near services such as food, lodging, and service stations.

The eMap is compatible with Garmin's line of downloadable MapSource CD-ROMs including U.S. Roads and Recreation, WorldMap, U.S. Topo, and MetroGuide U.S.A. When paired with the MetroGuide U.S.A. CD-ROM, the eMap has the ability to look up address and telephone number information for nearby services and points of interest. The eMAP will store 8 or 16 MB of downloaded CD-ROM information at a time depending on the size of the cartridge you use in the unit.

Designed with all types of users in mind, this unit will take you from the car to the hiking trail and beach without missing a beat.
Customer Review: A solid, no frills workhorse. Getting outdated, though.
I've been using my eMap in my car since 1999. Whenever my car is on, the eMap is on. I'm sure it has easily logged more than 4,000 hours of use over the years. Even without a single firmware upgrade, it continues to perform well. The eMap is an old model and does not have the fancy features of the latest GPS units, but it has a decent base map and with a little common sense and practice it can be a useful navigation tool. I'm finally upgrading to the 7200, which I'm sure will blow me away. But I'm keeping my eMap anyway because it's been so good to me over the years.
Customer Review: Fantastic System with tons of available accessories
I've owned this unit for a couple of months now. I didn't want to write a review without having used it. It works GREAT. There are some issues, but they are readilly worked around. First issue is price. For the base unit, the price is quite reasonable. However, as another reviewer mentioned, in order to really make it work right, you really do need some accessories. Garmin accessories surely seem over priced. In order to use this on the road, I purchased a Dash-Mount, and a power cable/pc serial cable. I picked up both of these for less than 40.00 through aftermarket suppliers. It didn't take me long to realize that I needed some extra software to download more detailed maps to the GPS base unit. MetroGuide from Mapsource is available through aftermarket distributors for under 75.00. It's somewhat tedious to download the individual regions, but well worth the effort. Additionally, with the PC cable, it interacts seamlessly with my laptop running either Metro Guide or Microsoft Streets and Trips (under 40.00). Of course streets and trips does not download to the GPS, but the GPS will plot its position in S&T, so if you can use the laptop, it works fine. Off road/camping is a different issue. I already own most of the paper maps for where I plan on going, and the GPS grids make it impossible to get lost. This doesn't even take into account the way it interacts with USAPHOTOMAPS (usaphotomaps.com). This receiver will plot my position using aerial photography available free and online. This is a great unit, with a readilly accessible manual from GARMIN, scads of available accessories through after-market dealers (gilsson.com), integration with software from Mapsource, Microsoft, USA photmaps, etc. A great unit that does everything I could ask for.

Customer Review: my magelon gps
I am very pleased with my new Mageleon gps unit...I took a trip recently and it got me right to where I wanted to go...have had no problems so far, except when she doent want to talk to me somtimes and that frustrates me.
Customer Review: Magellan Maestro 4050
We are enjoying the new device, and we look forward to some travel this fall where we can really put it to the test. California has lots of Spanish place names which are sometimes butchered by the voice, but the printed version is always on the screen when we can't understand her. We have not yet given "her" a name, but we will!
