Hair Graft Surgery and Hair Transplants

If you are losing your hair, you have several options. You can accept it, of course. But if you've decided you don't want to be going bald, there are different types of hair replacement surgery. One option is hair grafts. Hair grafting has come a long way since it was originally begun, but there are still things you need to watch out for.

For men and women, losing hair can be very traumatic. There are many reasons for hair loss, including diseases, male and female pattern baldness, and alopecia.

Hair grafts are not for everyone who is losing hair. They work best when there are still areas of the scalp that do have hair. This is because you need such sections to provide the donor hairs. Originally, hair grafts were done as punch grafts. These were groups of hairs that were transplanted together.

Newer hair graft methods use fewer strands of hair, in order to get a more natural effect. Follicular unit hair transplantation or micrografting is an example. Here, the grafts can be a small as a single strand of hair. Obviously, you need a large number of such grafts to fill in an area. Mini and micro grafts use several hairs. Many surgeons alternate the size of the grafts, as this will look more like the way hair grows naturally on the scalp. In order to do grafts, an incision must be made. Sometimes this is done with a scalpel and sometimes it is done with a laser.

You will need to come up with your own way to pay for hair graft surgery. And the cost is not cheap. Adding to the cost is the fact that this is not covered by insurance in general. The cost varies from $3-10 dollars for each graft, so the total cost can be several thousand dollars, even up to twenty thousand dollars, depending on the area being covered and where you live and are having the cosmetic surgery.

The hair transplantation procedure has risks too, including infection and scarring. There are also no guarantees that you will like the final look. If you are considering this, make sure you have thoroughly investigated your cosmetic surgeon and that he or she has experience in this area and is board certified.
