Body Image - 3 Truly Simple Ways to Transform a Negative One

In all the years I have been supporting women on their personal growth journeys, I am consistently dismayed by how many have a negative body image.

Otherwise savvy, healthy and powerful women are unhappy about their looks. They are quick to catalog their flaws. "I am fat, I need to lose weight, my rear end is too big, I look old, I hate my body." When paid a sincere compliment, they automatically minimize it, make a negative statement about themselves.

The Law

The Law of Attraction simply states that you get what you focus on whether you want it or not. What do you want to attract... self worth or self-deprecation?

If you would like to feel great about yourself and enjoy a positive self-image (and I know you do!), here are 3 Truly Simple Ways to Sidestep a Negative Body Image

1. Talk to yourself the way you would talk to a child about her beauty and body.

  • Would you tell a 10 year old girl that she is fat, not pretty, too skinny, too this, too that? No, of course you wouldn't.
  • That little girl is inside you. When you say those things to yourself, you are saying them to her. She needs to hear that she is beautiful, that she is loveable and perfect just as she is.
  • Find a photo of yourself as a young girl and put it where you can see the hope and beauty in her eyes as part of your regular routine. Remember, the words you say to yourself, you are saying to her. See her beauty, become her champion. Tell her she is wonderful just as she is.
2. Be grateful of all the positive aspects of your body

  • Criticizing yourself is harmful. Stop it immediately! This takes practice and will get easier as you start catching yourself. Have something positive to tell yourself as an 'antidote' to the criticism such as "I am in the process of changing, and I approve of myself today".
  • Start focusing on what is good about your body. Be grateful for the wellness that you have.
  • As you focus on what you do like about yourself, you continue to see more positives in your reflection. You continue to find reasons to approve of yourself.
3. Make a decision to think and speak well of yourself.

  • Be aware of your self-talk. You may not even realize you judge yourself harshly. Practice affirmations of positive self-image, acceptance and appreciation.
  • Outside beauty is an inside job. When you choose to encourage and appreciate yourself, you will be inspired to treat yourself in kind, loving ways.
  • When someone pays you a compliment, simply say "Thank-you". The outside world will notice your beauty once you do.

Beauty is a woman who loves and approves of herself regardless of wrinkles, grey hair and thigh size.

You are unique and unrepeatable. Walk like a queen!

For Your Journal, For Your Thoughts:

  • How do you feel about your looks?
  • What is the balance of positive and negative thoughts?
  • How easy is it for you to think or talk positively about your appearance?
  • What would you love to feel about yourself?
  • What do you wish you had heard as a young girl about your looks?
