Depression affects many people at some point in their lives. Symptoms can include a persistent feeling of sadness, hopelessness, anxiety about the future, loss of interest in previously enjoyed activities, and changes in sleep patterns and appetite. Mood, relationships, energy levels, and productivity can all be adversely impacted by depression. While some severe cases of depression may merit a pharmaceutical approach, many less severe cases of depression can be managed using natural methods. Here are 5 natural approaches to combating depression:
1. Eat right. The mind and body are connected, and the health of one will impact the health of the other. Focus on fresh vegetables and fruits, lean proteins, and whole grains. Reduce your intake of processed foods and sugars. If you struggle with maintaining an appetite, try carrying around healthy, high protein snack foods such as jerky and nuts, and eat mouthfuls throughout the day. If you tend to overeat, don't eat while distracted, like in front of the TV. Try setting a time at night beyond which you will not eat.
2. Take supplements as needed. Start with a good food based multivitamin, and a calcium supplement if you aren't consuming large quantities of calcium rich foods. Take fish oil, which has a number of physical benefits including improved brain health. You can try 5 HTP (hydroxytryptophan), which is a natural antidepressant and precursor to serotonin, a brain neurotransmitter involved in mood regulation. If you feel anxious, you may also take L-theanine, which is a natural anti-anxiety supplement.
3. Talk things out. A counselor can be a very helpful resource. A good one whom you are comfortable with can help offer perspective and trained feedback. Your friends and family are also important to offer you emotional support.
4. Implement a doctor approved exercise program. Cardiovascular exercise is ideal as a treatment for depression. You want to choose activities that elevate your heart rate over a sustained period of time, so that you can enjoy the mood elevating effects of endorphin release. Ideally, you will work up to 45 minutes of cardio 5 times per week, but keep in mind that any exercise is helpful.
5. Do one kind thing for yourself daily. Create a list of small activities or things you enjoy, and choose one each day to complete. Once you have crossed off everything on your list, begin a new one.
