Try a mixture baking soap and vinegar, mixing a teaspoon of each in a small bowl or dish and applying directly to the bite. The resulting bubbly poultice stops pain immediately and reduces redness and swelling later.
And for children, the bubbling keeps their minds off the sting and itch caused by the bite.
Baking soda and vinegar also works for fire ant bites and bee and wasp stings. If you are severely allergic, of course, use emergency medications as prescribed by your physician.
Looking for a more "grown up" approach?
Consider getting a tube of a licorice-based product like SimiCort at your local pharmacy or health products store.
SimiCort is a cream made from licorice. You may have heard about serious side effects of licorice when taken internally, causing a build up of potassium (especially in people who take ACE-inhibitors for high blood pressure, such as lisinopril). The side effects of licorice do not occur when it is used externally.
The primary effect of licorice, however, also acts on the skin. The glycyrrhizin in licorice inhi bits the enzyme 11-beta-hydroxcysteroid dehydrogenase, which keeps naturally occurring steroids active in the skin. Licorice is not a steroid, and does not encourage the body to produce steroids; it only keeps existing steroids from breaking down in the skin, without affecting steroid levels one way or another in the rest of the body. In this way SimiCort provides the benefits of a hydrocortisone cream without the hydrocortisone.
SimiCort is made by Enzymatic Therapy.
