Bathroom tiles come in many different styles and varieties. Widely considered the most attractive of all these are Natural Stone Tiles. However as with most things, if you want the best you must be prepared to pay for the best. Natural stone bathroom tiles do not come cheap.

Natural stone bathroom tiles can be broken down into 3 categories based on the type of rock they come from; Igneous, Sedimentary and Metamorphic.

Over time, as more and more sediment gets deposited to the top of the stack, the pressure at the bottom increases. As the pressure increases, the water in the stack is squeezed out leaving behind its dissolved minerals. These dissolved minerals act as a glue to bind the sediments.

The second means by which sedimentary rock is created is crystallisation from dissolved minerals. This occurs in shallow water bodies (the sea or lake) when water evaporation is greater than precipitation. As the water in the water body evaporates, it leaves behind its dissolved minerals and these settle at the bottom of the water body to form sedimentary rocks.

Metamorphic rock includes Marble, Coal, Quartz and Slate. Simply put, 'metamorphic' means to change form. Metamorphic rocks are Igneous or sedimentary rock which have changed form, this usually occurs by the extreme heats and pressure deep in the earth's crust.

Marble has long been associated with luxury and affluence. It is a very hard stone and because of this it is possible to achieve a high polish. It is also suitable for and is used frequently in hospitals where sanitation is of paramount importance.

As noted at the start of this article, natural stone tiles can be expensive. You can realistically expect to pay a number of times more than an equivalent ceramic or porcelain tile but if you have the budget for it, it is certainly an attractive option.

Something else which needs to be considered is weight. Natural stone bathroom tiles are a lot heavier than their Ceramic or Porcelain counterparts so you want to check that your floor or wall can take the load. In general your Subfloor should be at least 1 1/8" thick. It may be worth asking an expert for advice on this as there are no hard and fast rules.

cup parsley

Place the ingredients in a food processor and blend until smooth. Pour into a microwaveable container, about 7 to 8 inches wide. Microwave on high for about 8 minutes and remove from the container. Allow it to cool and harden a bit and then cut into squares.

Homemade Dog Food
2 lbs. hamburger
1 boiled potato
3 cups cooked rolled oats
1/4 cup spinach
1 cup cooked brown rice
1/4 cup wheat germ
1/4 cup brewers yeast
1 TBS minced garlic

Cook the hamburger and potato. Then combine the ingredients in a food processor and mince until fine. Roll into small balls and let it set for a couple of hours. Feed fresh daily.

The Truth About Natural Skin Care

Buyer beware! What you see is not always what you get.

Natural skin care, you would think, would be made from natural ingredients. Natural ingredients come from plants, right?

Well, maybe...

The various different dictionaries define natural as

  • being in accordance with or determined by nature
  • present in or produced by nature
  • inherent, not acquired
  • not produced or changed artificially; not conditioned
  • not altered, treated, or disguised

However, in the world of natural skin care products, the word "natural" has no legal definition. Manufacturers can call their products natural if they contain all natural skin care ingredients, a few natural ingredients or none at all.

Even organic natural skin care is not what you might think. Surely if it says organic it must have all healthy ingredients, right?

Well again, maybe or maybe not!

If the products are USDA certified organic skin care to the National Organic Program Standards (NOP), i.e. the organic food standards, then you can feel that you've got a healthy product. However, if the product says organic, but it's not certified then there may be a problem.

Recently the Organic Consumer's Association (OCA) commissioned a study of organic natural skin care and body care products from health food stores. The results showed that many of the popular products labeled as organic actually contained the cancer-causing contaminant 1,4-dioxane.

The products that were certified organic according to the NOP standards did not contain 1,4-dioxane.

So, you might say, that's easy, just buy certified organic skin care products. That would have worked in the past, when the only organic standards were the NOP food standards.

Until recently, there were no certified organic standards for skin care, cosmetics and personal care products. However, a short time ago companies like L'Oreal, Estee Lauder and Hain from the conventional skin care industry got together and formed the OASIS organic standards. There was no comment period for input from the organic consuming public. Organic farmers and skin care companies who had achieved certified organic status through the NOP were not invited to participate.

The OASIS organic standards allow non-organic ingredients grown with synthetic pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers. They also permit petroleum derived synthetic preservatives such as phenoxyethanol and ethylhexylglycerin.

Another organic standard is Ecocert. It's new to the U.S., but has been the European standard for some time. This certifying body also has a less-than-organic standard and is known to certify products as organic that don't even meet their own low standards.

These pseudo-organic standards, by allowing a variety of synthetic ingredients in products they certify as organic, undermine the true meaning of organic as set forth with the NOP.

So, even though it should be easier to identify truly all natural organic skin care products, it really isn't ... if you're just looking at the label.

To make sure you get truly healthy, all natural skin care products, do these things before you buy:

  1. Check out the manufacturer. Many of the mainstream cosmetic and skin care companies are coming out with natural skin care lines that aren't very natural.
  2. Look for USDA certified organic or certified organic to the NOP standards.

  4. Check the ingredients every time you buy. Manufacturers sometimes change the ingredients.

Natural Health and Organic Gardening - A Winning Combination

Most people would agree that a basic ingredient of natural health is natural whole food. Avoiding processed foods and eating food as nature intended is one of the quickest ways you can begin feeling better and taking better care of yourself.

I'm sure that most of us who are interested in natural health therapies are aware of the pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers used in commercial food production are not necessarily the best thing to put in to our bodies. And how can we know that when we wash them that we are getting that stuff off? We can't. I'm sure most people would prefer to buy organic foods. But let's face it, they are pretty expensive and maybe we can't or don't want to spend our money that way.

One great way to be sure you know what goes in your fruits and vegetables is to grow them yourself. Gardening and specifically organic gardening is not as daunting as many people might think. It is so rewarding that even if you don't consider yourself a 'green thumb' or if gardening does not appeal to you; you might be surprised to learn you really enjoy it.

I live in Southern California now so I am fortunate to be able to grow lovely things to eat all year. But I'm a Minnesota native (arguably one of the more gardening-challenged places in the U.S. for a good part of each year). I gardened there too. It doesn't matter where you live. You can make the most of your local conditions and grow healthy food.

In every thing in life I truly believe that if you keep it simple you will have better success.

Here are my Keep It Simple ideas with regard to gardening:

1. Start small - A plot that is 4 feet wide and 4 to 10 feet long is small enough to manage and big enough to grow quite a lot of vegetables. You can use containers if you don't have ground to grow in. Containers can be an advantage; you can control the quality of your soil and the amount of moisture and sunlight. Just be sure they are at least a foot deep or more to keep most vegetables happy.

2. Ask the pros- If you live in the U.S. we have a wonderful free resource called Master Gardeners. Master Gardeners are volunteers who work for the County Extension and staff phone lines to answer your questions about gardening and pests in your local area. Look them up in the 'county' section of the blue government section of your white pages. In addition to any gardening questions you have, ask them for one best resource book to buy for your local area.

3. Buy a book- Buy at least 1 good reference book for gardening in your area. In the western U.S. it is the Sunset Book of Western Gardening.

4. Plants need to eat too- Fertilize organically. My favorite method is with compost tea. Compost tea is just what it sounds like; tea brewed from compost. I have a great local organic/hydroponics store that has compost tea available every Saturday free of charge. Call some stores in your area to see if someone near you does the same thing. My second favorite organic fertilizer is chicken manure.

5. Control Pests- Many pests can be controlled by handpicking or spraying with a stream of water to knock them off. Horticultural oils and soaps can also be used to deter pests and keep your food pesticide free.

Growing your own food is fun and satisfying. The vegetables tend to taste better and you know they are healthy since you know what you did or did not put on them. Some of the simplest to grow are salad greens such as leaf lettuce, Swiss chard and arugula, as well as tomatoes, beets, carrots, squash and beans.

An important final note of why gardening falls in to the category of natural health therapies is that in addition to great tasting healthy food you get exercise doing it. Gardening can be a great way to burn calories and enjoy nature. What a fantastic way to do something good for yourself!

Natural Painkillers - Avoid the Dangers of Aspirin & Ibuprofen

Nearly one-third of all gastrointestinal bleeding related hospitalizations and deaths are the result of using aspirin, ibuprofen, or other NSAIDS (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), according to an August 2005 report in The American Journal of Gastroenterology. But you may think, oh well I'm only on low dose aspirin, or baby aspirin, and my doctor told me to take it for heart attack prevention. However, up to one-third of these GI bleeding deaths were due to low dose aspirin. In real-life numbers, this means that out of every 100,000 people that use aspirin, ibuprofen and other NSAIDS, 15 will die from it.

If these odds look okay to you, then carry on. But if they seem rather high, and out of proportion to the reason you're using painkillers, then you may want to look at some natural alternatives.

If you find yourself in need of a painkiller, you should investigate both acupuncture and EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique), if you want long-term results. Taking a pill or supplement that kills the pain for a few hours is a coping mechanism, but not a solution. You have to find out why your body is experiencing pain and heal/release the root or cause of that pain from your body. Another natural painkiller is White Willow Bark (from which aspirin was derived). White willow bark was originally used by Native American Indians and boiled to make a tea which was drunk to alleviate pain. It was also used 2,500 years ago by Chinese physicians, who also used the bark of the willow tree to treat pain and fever.

In the 19th century, western scientists discovered the active ingredient in willow bark was salicin, a natural chemical which the body first converts into saligenin and then into salicylic acid. Using this model, German chemists synthesized acetylsalicylic acid (an non-natural molecular structure and therefore able to be patented by the Bayer drug company), from which all pharmaceutical ASA (acetylsalicylic acid) products are made. However both ASA and natural salicin work in a similar way.

White willow bark reduces pain by blocking the body's production of inflammatory prostaglandins, which are hormone-like substances involved in inflammation and muscle contraction. White willow bark is also a very effective fever reducer. You can buy it in capsule form and either swallow it, or, open the capsules and mix the powder with Cocoa Butter to make a suppository (I do this for children - but make sure to reduce the dosage appropriately).

In its centuries of use there have been no contra-indications recorded from the use of white willow bark, or salicin. Traditionally it has proved safer then Aspirin and other synthetically derived salicylate based anti-inflammatory drugs. No cases of any serious side effects have ever been reported in medical literature. It is gentler on the stomach, and has a less toxic effect on the body in general.

The only restrictions on usage is that white willow bark should not be taken with aspirin, or by those sensitive to salicylates (found in foods like berries, currants, prunes and raisins). People with gastritis or ulcers should also avoid it, or use it in suppository form only. It should not be used by children under 16, for the same reason aspirin should also not be used: there is the potential for developing Reye's Syndrome in children, during a viral infection.
