Most adults need eight hours of sleep each night. You may need a bit more or less. There are many out there who sleep as little as possible.Their busy lifestyles dictating their sleep time. Others have no trouble getting plenty of sleep(and are often hard to get out of bed - some teenagers for example).
Sleep is essential to our health and to optimize our every day performance.
Following are some tips that can help you achieve better sleep
Get a routine. Organise your day with regular periods for eating, doing chores, cultural or social activities - and going to bed, and getting up in the morning. In this way we develop an "inner clock" and keep it running in a coherent manner.
Having a warm bath can help you sleep better. The warm water can relax and soothe your body. Listening to soothing music or sipping a cup of relaxing herbal tea. With the relaxing before bedtime routine, it can help your body to ease all the tension you have and go to sleep easily.
If you are having trouble sleeping at night, try not to nap during the day - you will throw off your body clock and make it even more difficult to sleep at night. If you are feeling especially tired, and feel as if you absolutely must nap, be sure to sleep for less than 30 minutes, early in the day.
Avoid strenuous physical exercise a few hours before bedtime - while regular exercise is healthy for the body, especially for older persons, it could affect your sleep much if you exercise a few hours before going to bed.
Eat magnesium-rich foods. Did you know that magnesium is one of the most critical minerals for healthy brain function? Magnesium helps regulate brain activity by preventing the brain from becoming to "hyperactive". A magnesium supplement before bedtime can improve sleep quality and even get you to sleep faster.
Create a peaceful sleeping environment: The right bed with the right mattress is just a pre-requisite for inducing better sleep. There are a number of other factors that can help one relax and calm down before sleeping. A serene ambience with proper lighting and comfortably cool temperature makes the body ready for sleep. Television and computers should be kept in separate working and entertainment areas of the house rather than inside the bedroom. This will enable you to avoid temptations to work or watch your favorite show at bed time.
