Sore After Running Or Cycling?

Feeling sore after vigorous exercise such as running or cycling is going to happen sometimes. Of course, the better shape an individual is in to begin with, the less soreness and stiffness he or she will experience. However, all runners, from the street jogger to the world-class professional will come up against physical problems. Soreness in the hip area is a common complaint after a running or cycling session.

This could mean something more serious is causing the problem, though a sore hip may just mean that muscles and joints have been overworked. Athletes at all levels have to seek treatment now and then to relieve pain and to uncover any hidden problems that may be causing soreness. Over the years, a number of experienced runners, trainers and doctors have discovered some ways to deal with the inevitable running or cycling physical problems.

Treatments

Though it sounds like a clich, a sore hip often responds well to the application of an ice pack. The coolness of the ice soothes sore muscles, which heat up due to irritation and increased blood flow. Application of ice also helps keep the area from swelling or to keep the swelling to a minimum. Application of a heating pad or artificial heat may relieve pain but won't do much about the tenderness of the muscles in the hip area.

Keeping the body hydrated by drinking the right amount of water will also help with soreness and stiffness. The human body is primarily made up of water and the muscles (as well as other parts of the body) must have sufficient water content to work properly. This is especially true of muscles that are sore and overtaxed.

Several companies make products for just such situations. Elite Ozone Body Care products, for example, are available for a variety of running/cycling situations. Warming oil helps stimulate blood flow and get needed oxygen to muscles. Elite Ozone Refresh Oil is good after activity during hotter times of the year. Many runners and cyclists use this product for self-massage after competition.

Both running and cycling are great sports, suitable for the amateur and professional. Those athletes that stay in top shape may be able to avoid all but the most minor, nagging problems. However, runners and riders will eventually get sore, have some aches and will need treatment or special attention from a trainer or sports medicine professional. Prevention is key, especially stretching the muscles of the body before competition. This alone may be the difference between being able to compete and not being able to answer the bell.
