Cat Health Care - Signs of Cat Flea Infestation and Prevention Tips

Fleas are horrible little parasites that attack cats by laying their eggs in the cat's fur; the eggs will hatch into larvae and later will develop into fleas. Depending on the color of the cat's coat, spotting the fleas can be very difficult especially if infestation is light.

Excessive scratching especially behind the ears or around the neck may indicate that fleas are present and causing havoc to the cat's body. Another sign of flea infestation is when the cat obsessively grooms the base of its tail or along the spine. You might also want to take a closer look at the cat's body, if indeed infestation has occurred, highly visible dark flaky specks can be seen particularly along the spine and the base of the tail. In fact, during heavy or severe infestation, you can actually see the fleas roaming all over the cat's body.

Try using a waterless bath to clean your cat without the need for water, it cleans and freshens your cat and may also help to keep flea infestation at bay.

Cat flea infestation should not be taken lightly and depending on the severity, it can be life threatening especially to kittens because excessive biting by fleas can actually result in massive blood loss. Further more, your cat might accidentally consume some of the fleas while grooming which may result with infestation by another parasite, the tapeworm.

Remember prevention is always better than cure so ensure your cat's environment is clean, regular grooming and provide a healthy balance diet to minimize the chance of getting fleas.

Travel Self Care - 6 Tips That Will Make Your Trip

Having just returned from an overseas trip, I was reflecting on what made the trip enjoyable and not overwhelming. Prior to the trip, I was extremely busy with coaching clients and tele-classes in addition to planning the itinerary for my husband, who was working overseas. Consequently I was becoming a little stressed. In my coaching sessions with my coach, I was able to remember to be in the NOW even though I was planning an itinerary for the future and to remember the purpose of the trip- to celebrate our 34th wedding anniversary- and not to get caught up in the details of must sees and how-tos. How do I want to be when making travel arrangements? was the questions posed to me. My answer, I want to have fun! Armed with that knowledge and attitude, the travel arrangements fell into place given the 9 hour time difference.

Handling overseas travel can be challenging or an adventure. Viewing the trip from the heart level and the stand of innocence can make the trip an adventure instead of focusing on jet lag, too little leg room, babies crying, delays and irritable passengers. I witnessed very different coping strategies on the flights over and back. The more control the person wanted to exert over the situation the less happy they were with their journey; then there was the family of 5 which included a small baby, who were flying stand by on an international flight. They exuded and portrayed happiness, serenity, flexibility and fun. They focused on enjoying the trip while still being aware of the comfort of the other passengers. They exhibited such honor and respect for each other and their children it was sheer pleasure to see. Whenever I caught myself getting irritated or impatient, I brought my focus to heart level then the situation just flowed. (It also saves a lot of energy.)

#4 Adopt a stand of innocence and non-judgement.

Travel opens the door to new vistas, thoughts and cultures. To really appreciate and enjoy the experience, I invite you to leave any judgement or pre-conceived ideas at home. Accepting other cultures or traditions gives freedom to see the novel and unlimited possibilities and ways of carrying out daily activities and routines. Children see the world all new and from an open perspective. The filter of awe and wonderment connects us to our global community.

#5 Hold the big picture/Detach from the outcome.

Plans go awry. The members of your family or group may not like seeing or doing certain activities. Holding the big picture of enjoyment for all eases a tense atmosphere. Honoring specific requests and then agreeing to accommodate them within time boundaries adds adaptability to the trip. On the flip side, detaching yourself from seeing all that you want to see can make the trip more relaxed for all.

#6 What are the gifts that this trip has given me? (Aside from purchased souvenirs)

I decided that I was extremely grateful to be able to make this trip. Even during the bumps of the trip, there was beauty, gratitude and love in being together and sharing an incredible experience. I learned to be flexible with schedules and in sharing my personal space. I met some amazing people and had deep insightful conversations with them. I learned to communicate creatively. I have a tremendous appreciation for people in the travel industry who demonstrate patience, service and concern.

Hairstyling Tips For Clients

One of the biggest complaints I hear from people is, "My hair looked so good when I walked out of the salon, but I can't get it to look like that when I try to style it at home!" Unless you know the tricks hairstylists use, it can be very frustrating trying to do it yourself. Here's some of the basics to remember. If you'd like more details, check out some of the other links on our site where we'll go a little more in-depth with each product.

The first thing to remember is to use the right cleaning agents. If you don't use the correct shampoos and conditioners for your hair type, it'll be very difficult to achieve the style. If you use something too heavy for your hair, it'll weigh your hair down and make it feel dirty by the end of the day. Consequently, if you use something that's not moisturizing enough etc, your hair will be frizzy and fly-away. As far as the brand name goes.. it's really up to your personal preference. I have fine hair myself, so I prefer something like Biolage over a brand like Paul Mitchell, which seems heavy on my hair. However, I know a lot of people who love Paul Mitchell. You'll just need to experiment a little here. Ask your stylist for some suggestions and go from there.

The second thing to remember is to use the correct styling tools. The same rules apply here. If you have thin, lightweight hair, you don't want to use something like a heavy styling gel. That will just weigh down your hair and make it feel dirty. So unless you're going for the wet look, stick to something like a mousse or even a spray gel for a stronger hold. The hairspray you use is also important. If your hair doesn't like to stay where you put it, spray a "working" hairspray in there before you style it. A working hairspray will help hold your hair in place but is light enough that you can "work" with it while blow drying or curling your hair. Then use a stronger hairspray to finish off your style and hold it in place.

Here are some quick tips on some looks you may be trying to achieve. To achieve a straight look, apply mousse or a light gel to your hair, and using a large round brush, take your hair by sections and blow dry it straight by wrapping your hair around the brush starting at the roots and working your way down to the ends. You can use clips to keep your hair separated if need be. Work your way around your entire head. Also, it helps to use a cool setting on the blow dryer to keep the frizz down. Spraying with a light, working hairspray beforehand also helps. If needed, you can also go back over your hair with a straightening iron.

To add lift to your hair, apply the styling product your using for your hair, spray the roots of the section of hair you're working with, and using a large round brush, over direct your hair when blow drying in the opposite direction of the way it's going to fall . This will give you some volume wherever you'd like it. You can also do this over directing trick with hot rollers. Finish off the look with a final quick spray of your working hairspray. Using the lighter hairspray will keep your hair in place while allowing it some movement. That same round brush can be used to flip out your ends.

If you like the curly look, use some gel and a diffuser on your hair dryer. A diffuser will hold your hair in a scrunched position while drying. To get some added volume on top, use the over directing technique and then scrunch the rest of your hair. With curly looks it's normally best to leave your hair just slightly damp and not dry it completely. This will prevent your curls from looking dry and frizzy.

The Truth Behind Dermatologist Skin Care

Dermatologist skin care products are often appealing but the effect they have on your skin is unpredictable. In fact, some anti-aging and skin resurfacing programs will produce adverse results if not followed correctly.

Mostly teenagers are quite privileged in that they can seek out a cosmetic dermatologist when their skin starts acting up - which it always does in teenagers anyway. But the costly dermatologist's trip for teenagers should be avoided. The natural form of our skin should not be aggravated by using products containing harsh ingredients suggested by a dermatologist.

The most common treatment that a dermatologist does is a facial chemical peel. This is something that cosmetic skin specialists perform on a regular basis. It involves using a special acidic compound to slowly remove the top layer of the skin and reveal the new skin tissue underneath. It actually helps to clear up problems like wrinkles and, in the case of teenagers, acne. The side effects of this procedure generally include redness and swelling. Plus, the skin needs to be kept out of sunlight while it is rejuvenating itself.

Bearded Dragons Cage - Controlling the Temperature

Beardies require a temperature gradient in their enclosures because they can't regulate their body temperatures like. They have to thermo regulate, which means that they have to move between areas of differing temperatures in order to regulate their internal temperature. To produce heat and a basking spot in your enclosure, you can use either a ceramic heat emitter, a reptile basking light (red, blue or white) or just a plain old household light bulb.

The best fixture for any of these choices is a porcelain dome light fixture. This type of fixture is a must with a ceramic heat emitter due to the amount of heat they produce. The temperature for this basking spot you created should be around 110oF for juveniles and can be around 95oF for adults.

Your Beardie will also need an area to cool down if he gets too warm. At the opposite end of the tank, you should try to keep the temp around 75-85oF. A few degrees within this temperature are just fine. Night time temps shouldn't be allowed to drop below 60oF, whereas 70-75oF is more comfortable for them. Don't guess on temps - you could cook or freeze your Beardie! Use a good thermometer, one on the cool side and another near the basking site.

A thermometer on the hot part and another on the cool part of the enclosure will make sure that your temps are in the range they should be in. Do not use hot rocks as they are potentially dangerous! Dragons dont sense heat well with their tummies, and can be lethally scorched without realizing.

A good heat source for night time is a ceramic heating element (CHE). CHE's are non-light emitting heating units. They get very hot but disperse heat over a very narrow (15" in diameter) and shallow area. The range for a 60 watt CHE is 8" down, the range for a 100 watt CHE is 10" down, the range for a 150 watt CHE is 12" down, and the range for 250 watts is 14" down.

CHE's are not effective in heating large enclosures and a rheostat or dimmer switch may be used for small enclosures so it doesn't get too hot. It is very important that CHE's only be used in porcelain/ceramic light sockets as the amount of heat that they produce is enough to melt regular plastic light sockets.

- Adequate light and heat - both are vital for your bearded dragon's satisfactory food intake.

Here's a facial skin care tip for you. Don't buy anything that you see advertised on TV. The companies literally pay hundreds of thousands of dollars for those 30 second commercials. There is no way that they have anything left in the budget for researching and developing effective products. I have a collection of tips for you below. Hopefully you'll learn a few things.

Every so-called beauty expert in the world has a facial skin care tip. But, sometimes they are not that logical. I have some straight forward advice for those of you that are tired of trying a hundred different things that don't work.

The first advice that most "experts" give is to choose products designed for your own skin-type. The truth is that if a product is good for the skin's overall health, the type is not important. You may feel that your face is too oily or too dry, but it may be the products that you are currently using that cause that. You may already see that my advice is a little different from the average facial skin care tip.

You see, almost every cosmetic in your bathroom contains either an alcohol or a mineral oil derivative or both. Alcohols are pretty easy to spot, but if you are unsure, copy the word into Wikipedia and look it up. Mineral oil derivatives include paraffin wax and petrolatum.

Alcohols cause dryness. So, you pick up your lotion to moisturize. Your face and hands feel better. But, the lotion actually destroys your natural pH balance and eventually leads to additional dryness. Lotions that contain mineral oils also clog the pores, leading to acne, blackheads, inflammation and irritation. To paraphrase this facial skin care tip, read the label.

Regardless of your skin-type, every day you should use a mild cleanser, avoid scrubbing and micro-beads designed to remove dead cells. They will damage live cells cause redness and irritation. Once every two weeks, use a deep cleansing mask. On the alternate weeks, use a moisturizing mask. You will return your face to a healthy balanced state, as long as your products contain the right ingredients.

The best ingredients are natural extracts from plants and minerals extracted from clay. Today's masks are not green and they don't dry up after 20 minutes requiring you to scrub them off. It was probably the scrubbing that cleaned your skin anyway.

For moisturizing, the best ingredients to choose are plant oils, fatty acids and lipids. Avocado and macadamia oils are deeply hydrating and feel luxurious.

This facial skin care tip can be especially helpful to men, but also to women that feel their faces are too oily. 1) Glowing Facial Mask: Having a tough time keeping your skin glowing? Well, here is an easy way to keep the radiance on your face intact. All you need is: a tbsp fuller's earth. 1 tbsp honey, 1 tbsp mashed papaya. Mix all these ingredients and put on face for 20 minutes then rinse off.

. For instant shine: Lightly beat two eggs mixed with some milk and run throuigh your hair. Leave on for five minutes, rinse and you will see a shine instantly.

. For Dandruff: Dissolve two aspirins in your dandruff shampoo and watch how it clears up. Use a good moisturizing conditioner afterward.

. For greasy hair: Use face powder. Put a little at the root of your hair before straying. If it is a serious problem, put the powder on heavily for 15 minutes wash completely, condition lightly, and style.

. Sweet shine: Honey applied in a small amount while washing the hair will give you a great shine.

5) Blackheads removal: Combine one fourth cup boiling water with one teaspoon of Epsom salt and three drops of Iodine. Let mixture cool until it's comfortable to the touch. Saturate a cotton ball with this mixture and dab on blackheads. This will allow the black heads to loosen so they can be easily squeezed with a gauze pad. Remember to apply a moisturiser soon after.

Well, myself, most likely I will head up north to the mountains for some cooler temperatures and rain as I live in the sunny desert southwest where it will get to 110 degrees and above and stay there! So while you're on vacation, here are a few quick tips to help you protect your skin not only from the outside with a good topical sunscreen, but also from the inside as well with what you eat and drink.

1. Eat lot's of colorful fruits & vegetables:

You can help protect your skin from the harmful UV rays, the free radicals that cause sun damage, by eating lot's of colorful fruits and green leafy vegetables which are high in antioxidants. Colorful fruits such as blueberries and strawberries as well as vegetables such as tomatoes and red and green bell peppers are very high in antioxidants which help protect the skin from the sun's damaging UV rays. As well, eat green, leafy vegetables such as broccoli and spinach which contain powerful antioxidants and vitamins known to protect the body from cancer including, recent studies have shown, skin cancer. Broccoli helps the body produce enzymes which help protect the skin from the sun.

2. Eat Fish:

Another excellent way to protect your skin from the inside out is to eat fish. Fish such as salmon or trout contain the omega 3s fatty acids, monounsaturated fats, which are the "good fats" you should have in your diet, and much like antioxidants, the omega 3's are known to help sooth inflammation of the skin as well as defend the body against free radicals. Health experts recommend at least two servings of a cold water fish per week. I am not a huge fish fan. I don't like anything "fishy tasting" with bones, skin or the head still there. However, I have come to really enjoy eating salmon filets and it is one of my very few fish favorites. A couple of tips for you if you are not a fish lover like me, at your favorite local market ask for a mild fish which is also fresh, the catch of the day, and see what you think. As a general rule, the fresher and milder the fish, the more accepted it usually is amongst us "non-fish loving people".

3. Eat Dark Chocolate:

For dessert or a light snack, fresh fruit is really your best bet, however, experts also suggest that eating chocolate is actually healthy for you as well. Good news if you are a chocolate lover! Yes, they say dark chocolate contains antioxidants called flavonoids which have shown to help protect the skin. Experts recommend no more than 2 ounces a day of dark chocolate but not milk chocolate because milk chocolate actually absorbs the polyphenols needed to help protect the skin.

4. Drink Green Tea:

There are four types of tea: black, oolong, green and white. But of the four types, green tea contains the most health and skin care benefits because it contains the highest level of anti-oxidants. The reason for this is that green tea contains high levels of polyphenols which are powerful antioxidants that target and fight free radicals such as those from the sun's UV rays. These polyphenols not only work to fight free radicals and cleanse toxins from within the body, they also work to improve the body's own anti-oxidant system, and improve the skin. Studies show that individuals who drank at least two cups of tea a day were 30 percent less likely to have carcinoma than those who didn't drink tea. Experts suggest drinking at least 1-2 cups of tea daily, and letting the tea steep for at least 5 minutes first before drinking in order to obtain a higher polyphenol level.

5. Drink Lot's of Water:

With hot summer temperatures and increased outdoor activities, the chances for dehydration and the need for staying well hydrated increase. So drink plenty of water. Water is a natural diuretic and helps the kidneys filter out toxins and free radicals from within the body. Having a sufficient amount of fluids in the body is essential to the overall health of all the body's organs as well as the health and protection of your skin. Experts advise drinking only natural pure water in order to limit or decrease the intake of any additional chemicals which may be in the water and can add to and contribute to the toxin level already in the body. Nonetheless, it is generally agreed that maintaining proper hydration is vital and will result in greater health for the body as well as for the skin. Orphaned Kittens - Homemade Formula and Care

Volunteering with the local animal shelter and the rescue groups, I have sadly come across orphaned kittens more than I want to think about.

The kittens have ranged in minutes in age on up. Depending on exactly how old they are, the first thing I do is start with an anti-bacterial bath. It is good to get whatever they might have on them OFF! This is especially important when getting them from the shelter. If they are newborns, I wait until they are a bit older.

Always keep the kitten warm and dry using licking like rubs. Have you ever watched a mama cat clean her babies? I try to intimidate the same process. Small strokes over and over again even around the face. I do this quite often throughout their growing stages. Not necessarily the bath but the cleaning process. And this can be replaced using a damp warm rag.

Most important is feeding them.

The formula is very simple and cheaper and healthier than buying pre-made mixes.

1 can of evaporated milk
2 small jars of meat baby food (stage 2)
1 plain yogurt
2 egg yolks
1 T of Karol syrup

Mix all together and add enough water to make 1 quart. Keep refrigerated. Luke warm for feeding.

Depending on the age of the kittens they will need to be feed every 2 hours. But like any mother will tell you eventually you can get them to sleep through the night and feed first thing in the morning and regularly throughout the day.

I actually use a surrogate mama cat that happens to be one of my own. She didn't start out that way. She was my first pregnant foster mom from the shelter. She is like 100 years old, rotten teeth and not exactly what I call eye candy. Even though she does not have milk, she tends to all of the other needs like bathing, and trust me, the first time you notice the mom cleaning the hineys of the babies you might re-think using one too.

But if this is not an option for you here are a few other tips:

They need their mama, and in this case that is you - be there.
Carry them around, especially when very young inside your shirt next to your skin, let them feel you and smell you. Keep them warm.
Clean and sterilize your hands in between other pets in the home. You do not want sick babies! And remember to even have clean clothing when being around them.
If you do have a sick kitten, it is very important to see your vet
I used a bottle so that my kittens got to experience the sucking just like mom. But in some cases a small syringe will do the trick.
Use a damp paper towel to "lick" the back ends and tummies of the kittens to stimulate the potting process. Do this after every meal.
At about 4 weeks, you can introduce kitten food and the litter box. Use unscented, un-clumping brand. Your kitten's health depends on it. You do not want them to lick anything with too many chemicals in it.

I loved the changes that occur right down to watching them learn to walk, and soon explore my home.

If you want to experience kittens, instead of allowing your cat to have kittens, foster a pregnant mom from the shelter. There is no short supply of them unfortunately. And they are happy to move them out to a safer, cleaner atmosphere. Not that our shelter is by any means, not clean. But you have animals coming and going. And you don't know anything about them or what they are bringing in to the shelter.

Most of all enjoy the process. They will be excited to see you. And before long you will be saying goodbye to your babies as they find their first real forever home.
