New Year's Focus - Key Strategy to Success

How ready are you and your business for the future - 2008 and beyond? Have you developed your capacity to monitor trends that impact your business with a focus towards a longer more strategic view? New profit opportunities will come from businesses that prepare for social, economic and technological trends and anticipate, adapt and evolve before their competitors.

With the New Year around the corner you may already be armed with your New Year's Resolutions and ready to go. Before you do, take a few minutes to reflect on the year ending. What did you love about it? To what extent did you accomplish your New Year's Resolutions? From your reflections, what's the message for you as you are about to enter the New Year with your New Year's Resolutions?

Consider the sayings, 'What we focus on will grow' and 'What we resist will persist.' What is it that you truly want to attract and develop in your life and business in the New Year? How does this align with predicted trends and trends you have noticed? What is it that you need to let go that no longer serves you? How can you maximize your personal resources of time, energy, and money?

Give yourself the gift of focus:

1. Look at the bigger picture of where you are heading. What truly inspires you? Whom will your business serve in 3-5 years from now? What will you offer that will delight your clients and support them in realizing their mission and personal and professional goals? What trends do you notice from network meetings, scanning industry and business news and magazines and the vast worldwide web? Thinking and planning ahead with these trends in mind will allow your business to thrive in years to come.

2. Focus on your core business. What is your core business? How do you communicate it to your target audience? Is it time to strengthen or develop your distinctive brand and/or niche? What will it take to let go of being everything to everyone? Based on what you see ahead for the next several years, what opportunities do you see that can strengthen your core business and your on-going success and personal fulfillment? A distinctive brand and niche with heart and soul may be your way to go.

3. Check in with yourself. Is your heart still in the business? This is the time to be totally truthful with yourself. What is your opportunity cost of staying in a business that no longer inspires and engages you? How much is it going to cost in terms of your physical and emotional health and well-being, your relationships and financially? Maybe all you need is to change the way you view your business and reconnect with what truly matters to you. Or it may involve a transition into a different business or heading for a major career transition.

The gift of focus will make your decision making process easier. Imagine it is the year 2012 and you are reflecting on your life and business. What will you be grateful of having done 5 years ago? Or regret not having done?

Time, energy and money are interrelated. Being engaged in your business with heart and soul will allow you to leverage your time and energy and ultimately have it reflected in your financial rewards.
