Fitness and Health For the Working Professional

As a 30-year old scientist living in the Bay Area of California, I place a great daily emphasis on having a great work-life balance. At times the work days can become a grind; the dreaded morning commute followed by long hours of giving presentations and meeting deadlines, to be wrapped up with traffic jams and detours just to get home. With the added demands of family, friends, and relationships, it is so easy to pick up dinner on the way home and toss the keys on the counter. This cycle can be detrimental to your health as without proper exercise and nutrition, your stamina will decrease, you become susceptible to weight gains, and you put yourself at risk for future aliments such as diabetes and heart disease as you continue down that path.

From glancing at magazine stands at your local supermarket, it is eye catching to see the various good-looking models that grace the front covers of fitness magazines. You might have a pre-conceived notion that the only thing these people do is work out or that they are somehow genetically gifted. While some may spend relentless hours in the gym, there are many others who keep hours just like you. The difference lies in the efficiency of their treatment of their bodies. Having great health increases your confidence to a level that radiates in your physical appearance. How does a working professional that faces the demands of long hours and trying to have a fun social life get to have great health in a reasonable time frame?

From my first chemistry course in undergrad we learned about the conservation of mass from Lavoisier and Lomonosov. Related to your body this law implies that your weight is constant. If your caloric input equals your caloric output then your weight will stay the same. If you eat more over time without burning the same number of calories in your respective daily routines, you will gain weight. This theory goes the other way for weight loss. A daily caloric intake is recommended to be around 2000, but this number might not work for you depending on your lifestyle. More active people will require more fuel for the tank whereas less active people will likely aim to be under that number.

As far as nutrition is concerned, I am a big advocate of having small meals spaced throughout the day. I enjoy eating, so why not enjoy many meals versus a few large ones? Spacing out my meals keeps me energized throughout the day, hindering large drops of blood sugar levels, and boosting my metabolism. On days where I will get some exercise I will consume more calories versus off days where I will relax and consume less. I pay special attention to portion sizes at the supermarket as I try to avoid meals that are greater than 400 calories. Being aware of your eating habits is a great way to stay energized throughout the day.

For physical fitness I strive to enjoy my activities such as running, hip-hop dance class, surfing, hiking, swimming, and weight-lifting. I generally exercise a few times a week, so when I do, I try to get the most out of it each time in terms of both enjoyment and results. I was not always in great shape with a low, single-digit body-fat percentage. Back in 2005, I had an appendectomy procedure and I never in my wildest dreams thought I would get a six pack while developing such diverse, hybridized athletic ability. I can run with the lean population and I can also lift with the bulky fitness dudes at my gym. Now this scientist teaches an abdominal exercise class, so go check out our new video footage of some of the exercises that I do in a minimal amount of time to be shredded. Most of the exercises have a beginner, intermediate, and advanced component, so there is something for everyone. So eat right, be efficient in exercising, and most importantly, enjoy your physical activities to balance out the mental stresses of everyday life.
