To grow orchids you need to give them water, light, air and fertilizer. If only it was that simple. So how do you take care of orchids? To set you on the right path follow these orchid growing tips.
1 Choose a variety suited to the environmental conditions that you will be able to provide. For example, if you have a west facing window sill that's obstructed by trees you should pick a variety that likes lower light conditions.
2. The growing medium for orchids should be New Zealand sphagnum moss or a fine or medium orchid bark mix. Do not use soil.
3. Orchids must be planted in pots with excellent drainage.
4. Orchids like humidity. A cheap way to achieve this is to use a hand spray 2 to 3 times a day. Not too many squirts at any time. And do not spray open flowers or you risk brown spots developing.
5. Air circulation is essential to help prevent disease but make sure there are no cold drafts.
6. Rain water is better than tap water. Think about introducing a rain catchment system in your garden. It's best to water the plant early in the day. Generally speaking plants need watered every 4 to 5 days but of course it all depends on the temperature.
7. Use a specialist orchid feed which has the correct balance of nutrients. Use on a regular basis.
8. Orchids need re-potting every 1 to 2 years. It's best to do this after flowering but it should be carried out immediately if the moss or bark becomes decomposed or packed.
