If you missed out on the grand opening of Tempe's newest "fetish-style" lounge Whip this Thursday, don't worry, Reverse Happy Hour was there to check it out. So, did you miss much? Well, if you were out in Scottsdale then you probably didn't miss a thing. That's because Whip brought everything that Scottsdale is known for to Tempe.
The walls were adorned with S&M-type pictures that at best could be described as just weird. VIP tables made sure that the dance floor was as tiny as possible and even the DJs were imports from the Scottsdale night scene, which meant an integration of techno and hip hop. The actual bar was sizable, with a good amount of room for people to wiggle in and get a drink.
As for the people, well, the crowd could be best described as random. There were your normal casually-dressed Tempe goers who decided to stop by and check the place out alongside fashion-savvy Scottsdale types who looked like they were imported along with the bar.
The real question is can this concept work? Can you take a theme that is best suited for Scottsdale and make it work in Tempe? If you take only the first night as your sample then yes, the place was definitely packed. But if your in it for the long run, which I'm sure the owners are, then this place will have to remain a work in progress in order to avoid the same fate of it's predecessor The Loft.
Anyone that's been out to both Scottsdale and Tempe knows that there is an obvious difference. But if a Tempe import has succeeded in Scottsdale (think Loco Patron, Dos Gringos and ACME) then why cant the reverse be true? We'll keep our eye out on Whip and keep you posted.
