Last Tuesday started the beginning of one of my roughest weeks in a long time. I lost a major portion of my hearing in both ears. So much so I could not hear anyone on the phone, and if I could see people's lips I might be able to comprehend what they were saying.
After being hit by a car and fracturing my skull as my head hit the pavement 5 years ago, many doctors have warned me this could happen and I'd probably eventually go deaf. But up until last Tuesday, I had been proving them wrong.
The next couple of days were spent with some of the best doctors on the planet in both western and alternative medicine trying to resolve my deafness.
In the end, they had no clear solutions and I was out over $4,000 for visits, medicines, procedures, and specialized hearing equipment. And my deafness continued.
As I went home struggling getting used to not hearing and the new chemicals doctors urged me to put in my body, I noticed a young, attractive, well-kempt woman on the sidewalk in Brooklyn where I live. She was staring at her feet and not moving. She was holding a cigarette in her hand and just staring. As I got closer she continued to stand motionless and stare at her feet.
She was strung out on drugs, an unusual occurrence to see in my neighborhood in Brooklyn these days.
I felt extreme compassion for her and gave her a warm smile as I walked past her. I said to her silently, "Don't worry, you will be OK. Hang in there and you'll find your way again."
At the bottom of the block I was waiting for the traffic light to turn green. Across the street a young man with a serious walking and possibly mental disability was trying to get across the street using the most unusual jerking motions.
It was obvious he has spent most of his adult life walking this way. The anguish on his face as he walked will be with me for some time.
I looked at him and smiled and with a look of passion said to him silently, "Everything is going to be all right. You are doing great. Things are rough, but you can handle it. Be strong and know I have huge love for you."
As I rounded the block to my street and started walking up the steps of to my house, I started to feel a huge surge of emotions and energy in me. I just received the gift of my drama: I was seeing myself in both the young woman and man.
And I was telling me that everything was going to be all right. Just stay strong and I will find my way again.
Funny thing is the next morning my hearing came back.
Action Step for the Week: What is your drama? Really reflect and get it in your mind. What are you getting from it, both positive and negative? What can you learn and bring with you to the next level? Ask yourself its gift. Then just watch what happens.
