Can Natural Remedies Help Diabetics?

Type 1, Type 2 and Gestational Diabetes are different conditions with the same main symptom: abnormally high blood sugar levels. While there is some debate about the causes of all types of Diabetes, there seems to be a consensus about the treatment (at least in Western medicine). A Western doctor's main concern in treating Diabetes is in controlling blood sugar levels. For this reason, prescribed medication includes insulin and oral medication designed to lower the blood sugar.

But insulin and oral blood sugar medications do nothing to control the complications that arise due to Diabetes. On the contrary, many prescribed oral medications actually list cardiovascular complications as a possible side effect. This is most troubling when, according to the ADA, 2 out of 3 diabetics will die from cardiovascular disease or strokes. Since there are currently no prescription medicines for diabetics that treat the vascular and/or immune systems in addition to lowering blood sugar levels, it is important for diabetics to consider using natural remedies as a protection against the serious side effects that can result from elevated blood sugar levels over time.

Natural remedies are also known as herbal medicine or complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). Herbal medicine has been used in all cultures for as long as people have been on the planet. In fact, it is only during the 20th century that synthetic organic chemistry became popularized and replaced natural remedies as a means of treating the sick. The popular tide may be shifting back to more natural treatments, however.

A 2001 Position Statement issued by the American Diabetes Association encouraged health care providers to discuss CAMs with their patients and acknowledge when new treatments may be effective in treating Diabetes. The book entitled "Natural Remedies: Their Origins and Uses" by Finn Sandberg and Desmond Corrigan states that an increasing percentage of Americans are using natural remedies such as supplements to enhance their wellness.

For Diabetics in particular, natural remedies can be used to do more than just control blood sugar levels. Herbal supplements, multi-vitamins and minerals have been shown to protect against infections, increase cellular regeneration, increase insulin sensitivity and more. A recent study by two universities in North Carolina found that a daily multivitamin and mineral supplement can make a remarkable difference in decreasing the number of infections suffered by patients with type 2 diabetes.

Though there are many herbal supplements and natural remedies for diabetics on the market, very few do more than simply treat high blood sugar levels. People with Diabetes should look for herbal supplements and natural remedies that also boost immune function, assist with cellular regeneration, fight oxidative stress and repair the vascular system. Diabetes is much less dangerous when well managed, and all diabetics should be encouraged to use natural remedies as a complement to existing treatment.
