The Beauty of Window Valances

In the interior design world, windows come in many different sizes and shapes to help enhance the view outside, whether it is pleasing or not. When you just want to add light into the room and are not concerned about privacy, then a window valance with or without coordinating curtains may be the right choice for you. You can find window valances in many different fabrics, styles, and more to give your windows the perfect look. They can be used alone or in conjunction with other curtains and window coverings, including sheers, blinds, and more.

Window Valance Choices

There is quite a bit of choice in window valances. Both formal and casual window valances can be found to meet your interior design needs. From heavier fabrics that are stiff and shaped to light and flowing fabrics, you can find any type of fabric that you can imagine in window valances for your home. Here are a few basic types of window valances that you can find at the store.

Pleated Valance: A pleated valance that is made from a heavier fabric is well shaped with clear pleats and sophisticated style. A lighter fabric can be used, but it must be reinforced with a stiffer lining to allow it to keep the shape that characterizes a pleated valance. Making these valances yourself may be a little more difficult as you want the pleats to hang evenly and smoothly, which can be difficult to do if you are not a professional. This type of window valance can be hung easily on a frame that will allow the valance to hang just right.

Swag: A swag valance is an accordion styled valance that can be short or hang all of the way to the floor. Either way, the fabric's width is folded in accordion pleats which swag across the top of the window. Sheer or lighter fabrics work best for a swag valance, but it can be done with heavier fabrics as well.

Balloon Valance: A balloon valance looks much like it describes - a balloon. It normally has a ruffle that is gathered on top of the curtain rod with pinches of material that allow the valance to balloon out. For even more of the balloon effect, some people stuff the areas with tissue paper or other paper to give it more of the look of a balloon. Many different fabrics can be used, but lighter fabrics work best for the full effect.

Window Valance Placement

Where you install the window valance can be just as important as what style and design that you choose. If your windows are a little short, then you can install the window valance high to give the window the look of more length. The same can be said of a larger window as well. Hanging it slightly low can help to give the window a smaller feel.
