When you invite your guests to your wedding they spend so much time choosing a wonderful gift for the bride and groom. They make sure they have a nice outfit to wear, they may even purchase something new. They make all of their travel arrangements and begin the hustle and bustle of trying to get to what will forever be known as "your wedding weekend." They finally make it to the hotel, after a few wrong turns - they were probably trying to save money and booked a rental car that did not come with a GPS. So now here they are, checking into the hotel and imagine the feeling of delight they have as they are presented with their hotel key and a wedding guest basket from the bride and groom.
All brides (and grooms) should take the time to add this little detail of excitement for each guest. It lets them know that you took time out of planning a day that is all about you, to think about them and that you appreciate them sharing in your special day. Wedding guest baskets can include just about anything that the bride and groom think will make their family and friends feel special. First decide if you want to give one basket per hotel room or per guest, then set a budget, as this can get costly. Most items should not be immediately perishable. Here are a few suggestions:
*something nice for the hands (small travel size lotion, sanitizer)
*snacks (sweet and salty - nuts, chips, cookies, fruit or granola bars)
*fruit (something that can hold up 2 or 3 days - orange, apple)
*small bottle of water
*gum, candy, mints
*map (maybe one of the city or just the surrounding area with a short list of 'things to do during down time')
*something that says welcome to the city (if you are in New Orleans that item might me Mardi Gras beads, or a small jar of baked beans if you are in Boston.)
Be sure to take the time to make a nice presentation of your wedding guest baskets, your guests will thank you. Don't just throw them together in a hurry, your guests will notice. For the final touch add a nice tag or label from the bride and groom:
*Thank you for sharing in our special day - Bride and Groom
*Karen and Alan's wedding weekend - Here's a welcome gift. We hope you enjoy the city
*Roses are red, Violets are blue, we're glad you came to hear us say "I Do" - Mark and Michelle - October 3, 2008
You get the picture... just be creative and make it fun. Drop your wedding guest baskets off at the hotel about a day before the first guest is scheduled to arrive. You will definitely gain points with guests and everyone will know that your wedding was worth all that they went through to get there.
