Do you get the shakes when it comes to picking out a good Valentines Day gift? Are you paralyzed when you flip the calendar on January 31 and see that big, red February 14 staring you in the face? Are you the kind of guy who thinks he is required to shell out loads of cash in return for a peck on the cheek?
I know lots of tough guys who turn to jelly when they have to come up with a good Valentines Day gift for her. And women aren't immune from this dilemma, either. We girls have struggled mightily when it comes to the right gift for him on Valentines Day - too much or too little can always be misinterpreted.
Let's start at the beginning. How did this whole holiday get started?
Blame the Romans. It was originally centered around a feast of fertility that was celebrated on February 15 and evolved into a secular holiday and grew in popularity in the 1800's in England when handmade cards gained favor.
The tradition of giving cards on Valentine's Day didn't blossom here until the 1850s when Mount Holyoke grad, Esther A. Howland, began mass-producing them. So, thanks Esther!
Did you know that 25% of all cards sent each year are Valentines? True, according to the American Greeting Card Association.
What is it about Valentine's Day and the whole gift giving thing? Maybe it's the amount of money being spent, maybe the thought of giving gifts exposes some feelings.
While there are the standard heart shaped candies - remember those funky pink things that had messages in them? - red roses, and the traditional cards, these days Valentines gifts are not what they used to be.
Think outside the box. Maybe a cashmere scarf - you can get them for less than $25, you know - or some original links art for your favorite golfer, or maybe even a personalized fortune inside a silver fortune cookie.
Originality and creativity are right there in front of you. And you'll get big props for this Valentines Day.
